Why Volunteer?

Volunteering is good for you! It's true - as well as helping others, volunteering has many benefits for you.

Time for a change?

Keen to boost your career?

Studying or hunting for your first job?

Just think volunteering sounds rewarding?

Think about why you want to volunteer and what you want to get from it and be sure that your motivation is strong enough to carry you through the tough times. Research your project to be sure it is making the right kind of difference and travel with your mind open to new possibilities.

Time for a change?
If you are at a time of change, or wish you were, volunteering could be the answer. Volunteering overseas can be a way of:

· Rewarding yourself after years of work, housework, parenting or study
· Escaping from a rut
· Gaining experience to help change to a new role in the same industry, or the same role in a different sector, or even a completely new career
· Moving back into the workforce after parenting or caring for elderly relatives
· Boosting your morale and employability after redundancy - perhaps you can even persuade your ex-employer to fund your trip?
· Moving out of the workforce - easing the transition into retirement
· Making the transition from military to civilian life

Keen to boost your career?
Whether you love or hate your job, volunteering overseas could be a smart career move as well as a rewarding experience. Sharing your skills is also a good way to develop them. Of course, you’ll need to select your project carefully to ensure it is relevant.

Volunteering overseas is an opportunity for you to:

· Develop 'soft skills' such as problem solving, teamworking, global awareness and managing with very limited resources
· Recharge your batteries with a complete change of scene, without falling behind in your career
· Develop or fine tune your skills in a more challenging environment
· Improve your language skills
· Understand more about a culture or country that your company does business with
· Explore and develop skills you don't usually use, and perhaps find a new career direction

Volunteering overseas can be a chance to:

· Improve your language skills
· Gain experience relevant to your chosen career
· Show employers that you can handle responsibility
· Explore a sector you think you'd like to work in but are not sure
· Move your career in a new direction, away from what you studied
· See the world and gain experience of a new culture
· Start a career in development or the charity sector

Just think volunteering sounds rewarding?
You don't have to have any particular reason to volunteer – perhaps you just want to make a difference, 'give something back' or experience life in another country. You have the opportunity to contribute to real development projects knowing that you're doing something positive in the world.
