Your time volunteering overseas should be a positive experience not only for you but also for the communities and environments you come into contact with. To aid this, we suggest:
· Before you go, find out what you need to know to keep yourself safe, avoid cultural misunderstandings, and make the most of opportunities.
· Follow the advice of the FCO – www.fco.gov.uk/knowbeforeyougo
· Try to learn as much as you teach and to give as much as you take.
· Respect the cultures, beliefs and opinions of others and treat people with sensitivity and courtesy.
· Travel with an open mind – don't judge things as 'better' or 'worse', and instead learn to appreciate differences.
· Minimise your impact on the environment. Use resources thoughtfully, take only photographs and leave only footprints.
· Use your economic power by buying local products where possible, supporting businesses which are socially and environmentally responsible, and paying a fair price when bargaining. |
· Make your volunteering sustainable and think about the long-term impact of your work. Can you train a local person? Can you set up systems to continue the work?
· Don't just forget all about it when you get back! Incorporate your new skills, experiences and awareness into your life and career.
· Don't make promises you won't keep. Many people tell the organisation they have been working with that they will send photographs or resources when they get back to the UK. Some say they will write an article or help to raise money. If you make these kind of promises, please keep them.
· Remember that as a volunteer, you're also an ambassador.
